Super Mario Brothers Underworld Theme Stolen by Nintendo?
I found out from a two-year-old post on Game Set Watch about the Super Mario Brothers theme song that part of it may have been lifted from a jazz funk album by Friendship, a collaboration featuring the work of Abraham Laboriel. (more Laboriel. He also founded the band Koinonina, which is better known.) That post intro'd me to this artist, who is really talented. The song was definitely copied.
It took some time to find the MP3 file with the samples of Super Mario's Underworld theme and Laboriel's song, so I've uploaded it for posterity. The sound is uncanny. It's not just the notes, as some commenters said, but the overall sound. The sound hacker probably worked pretty hard to get that chip to sound like a bass.
Laboriel should get credit for the unique sound.
