Setting up your new (used) Aironet 1200, IOS style

Let's say you're the kind of person who prefers to type rather than click and wait. I'm the kind of guy who doesn't like to write tutorials that require screenshots. This should work well for both of us!

Telnet to the device, or use the console cable.

# IOS instructions to set up your AP

enable

# (Then type the password.)

configure terminal

# now we should change the password to enable config mode

enable password 0 thepassword

# now we set up a username - this will be useful for ssh
# use your regular unix username instead of "johnk"

username johnk password 0 mypassword
username johnk nohangup
username johnk privilege 2
exit

# set up the ssh server
crypto key generate rsa usage-keys label sshkeys
# choose 2048 bits
configure terminal
ip ssh rsa keypair-name sshkeys
ip ssh time-out 120

At this point, you can now ssh into your access point.

johnk@host% ssh 192.168.111.253

That defaults my username to johnk.

If you need to find the ip address, type this into the toplevel prompt in IOS:

show ip aliases
