The new Google Search Console shows you what URLs were are causing 404 errors, and not in the index. A static archive of this old Drupal site worked okay, but I needed to redirect old URLs so they’d work again.
The new Google Search Console is awesome. It gives you a lot of details about problems on your site that will harm the Google indexing, and cause pages to be dropped from the index.

The best tool for replacing strings is Perl. It can even do it for multiple files. You don’t need to know much Perl to use the “Perl PIE” technique, that turns a potentially long script into a one-liner. I used it to start an SEO task on this site.
